Building a custom wooden staircase for your home starts with getting everything just right. That’s why we begin with a detailed visit to your place. We’ll take a close look at the space where your new staircase will go, making sure it fits perfectly with your vision and the overall style of your home.

We’ll carefully measure the opening in the floor where the top of the stairs will connect, taking into account every inch and any unusual shapes. Knowing the distance between the floors is important too, as this tells us how high the staircase needs to be. This is where precision comes in – it ensures your staircase looks beautiful and is also comfortable to use.

We don’t want you feeling cramped under the stairs. We’ll also measure the available floor space at the bottom to make sure there’s plenty of room for you to walk around comfortably. But it’s not just about space, we’ll also figure out the ideal number of steps for a smooth ascent and plan for enough headroom at the top so you won’t bump your head. If your staircase includes a landing, we’ll factor in its size too, so everything flows nicely together.

In Ireland, it’s important to work with a qualified joiner who understands the local building rules. This way, you can be sure your staircase is safe and meets all the regulations. We recommend some minimum sizes for comfortable staircases, like a width of at least 800mm (around 31.5 inches), with wider being even better (think 900mm to 1000mm). The height of each step (called the rise) should be between 550mm and 700mm (around 21.7 to 27.6 inches), and the depth you step on (called the going) should be comfortable at 220mm to 250mm (around 8.7 to 9.8 inches). We also make sure there’s at least 2100mm (around 82.7 inches) of clear space above your head as you walk up the stairs.

For cut string or closed string styles, we start by installing the sturdy stringers, the foundation of your staircase. These are meticulously positioned according to the agreed design, ensuring perfect alignment. Next comes the tread each tread and riser is carefully placed and secured, creating a safe and comfortable ascent.

If your staircase features a landing, it gets its turn in the spotlight next. We’ll precisely position and secure it, ensuring a smooth transition between levels. Then, we go for the balusters, those vertical supports, that are securely fixed to the treads and risers, followed by the handrail installation along the entire length.
